What is Finance, Benefit and Debt?
Finance, Benefit and Debt support is part of the Ministry of Justice's Commissioned Rehabilitative Services (CRS).
It helps men in prison and probation to deal with various money-related issues, aiming to improve their overall financial literacy and stability, and ultimately, to reduce reoffending.
We provide one-to-one support and develop a personalised action plan for each participant.
Delivery
The Growth Company delivers the Finance, Benefit and Debt service on behalf of the Ministry of Justice.
We work in 9 prisons and across 22 probation sites across North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Humberside, and Lincolnshire.
Finance, Benefit and Debt Services in Prisons
Newly remanded in custody or recently sentenced (immediate needs):
- Contact creditors to prevent debts from increasing
- Support to pause or cancel payments
- Request that court fines are put on hold
- Apply for 'breathing space' while awaiting sentencing or serving time
Preparing for release (resettlement):
- Support to apply for a bank account or obtain identification
- Assistance with applying for benefits
- Basic budgeting and money advice
- Help contacting creditors to explain circumstances
- Support to set up repayment plans
- Guidance finding longer-term solutions to manage debt
Finance, Benefit and Debt Services for People on Probation
We can help people to:
- Manage debt, arrange payment plans, speak to creditors, and understand income and expenditure
- Access their credit report
- Pay court fines, including through deductions from benefits or wages
- Liaise with Jobcentre work coaches and submit benefit applications
- Budget effectively and manage money
- Open a bank account, obtain identification, and manage their account
- Get help with HMRC or tax queries, including self-assessment
- Set up or amend direct debits and regular payments
