  • The Growth Company will deliver WorkWell in Manchester from December 2024.
  • The programme aims to help individuals with health-related barriers remain in or return to employment.
  • Part of a broader UK government policy, it focuses on early intervention in healthcare settings and includes collaboration with employers.

A new programme is set to help Manchester residents who are suffering from poor health stay in or move into work.

Part of a broader UK government initiative, WorkWell aims to achieve the objectives outlined in the Get Britain Working white paper, which seeks to reform employment, health, and skills support to address rising economic inactivity levels, help people secure good jobs, and create an inclusive labour market in which everyone can participate and progress.

WorkWell will be delivered in part by the Growth Company in partnership with Manchester City Council and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. It is designed to provide holistic support for individuals with health conditions or disabilities, particularly those affected by musculoskeletal health problems.

The programme will prioritise early intervention because evidence shows this is the most effective way of helping people to remain in or return to work. Participants will be referred to more intensive services if necessary.

In addition to working with individuals, WorkWell will assist employers in making reasonable workplace adjustments, ensuring employees have the best chance of staying in or returning to work.

Michelle Leeson, Managing Director of the Growth Company Employment, reacted positively to the news: “Programmes such as WorkWell play a crucial role in tackling the negative effects of long-term illness on individuals, employers, and the broader economy.

“We know from our work across the North of England and beyond that early intervention and person-centred support are essential tools in preventing people from falling out of the labour market.

“We are therefore looking forward to delivering these benefits to the people of Greater Manchester, building on the positive outcomes achieved by similar services.”
